British Science Week

Mar 12, 2021

Each year, the British Science Association runs a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths called British Science Week.

At St Edward’s School we are committed to preparing young people to live life to the full. We have the highest expectations of all of our students, and they leave us ready to go to some of the best universities in the world, to exciting employment opportunities; or empowered to take their next steps in learning.

We continue to inspire the next generation and bring learning to life. Here, our subject leaders of science, technology, engineering and maths more …

Our science curriculum has been created by a team of fantastic science teachers to develop inquisitive minds. At St. Edward’s we educate students in science so that they can; observe, question and investigate independently in order to take ownership of their knowledge of our world. This enables students to make rational decisions so that they can appreciate and enjoy life to its fullest. Students have excellent opportunities to investigate practical science in our science labs from Year 7 onwards and our A-level leavers find these skills invaluable as many progress to university or careers in STEM subjects.

It’s great to be returning to school in British Science week given how much science has contributed towards our safe return and the ability to test pupils and staff alike. Science teachers have been discussing this week how Year 8 and 9 students can enter the laboratories and complete practical work for the first time in many months after our Year 7 students enjoyed this opportunity prior to Christmas.”

Design and Technology at St Edward’s offers students the opportunity to experience, learn, test and develop new skills in four key areas. Learners are given opportunities in Food and Nutrition, Textiles and Fashion, Graphic Products, Systems and Resistant Material Technology. This initial introduction in Year 7 leads through to option choices for GCSE and A Level.

“Technology enables students to actively contribute to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of themselves, their community and their nation. It teaches how to take risks and so become more resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable. Students develop a critical understanding of the impact of technology on daily life and the wider world. Additionally, it provides excellent opportunities for students to develop and apply value judgements of an aesthetic, economic, moral, social, and technical nature both in their own designing and when evaluating the work of others.”

The St Edwards mathematics department delivers an outstanding maths education that provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of maths, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Mathematical literacy has been shown to improve people’s quality of life, with everything from reading bus timetables, managing personal finances, or studying maths to the highest level. At St Edward’s the maths department endeavor to meet pupils at their level of need and highlight the beauty of mathematics in everything we do. We believe this will best support them in leading rich and fulfilled lives.“  Mr. M Hegarty, Mathematics Subject Leader

Engineering covers a wide range of disciplines – anything from rockets to mobile phones and even hip replacements! Engineering is not just about ‘fixing things’ it is about understanding how, and why things work. Engineers are involved in all aspects of designing, building and testing new technologies and products. Creativity and problem solving are at the heart of every engineering industry.

“Engineers don’t sit back and watch – they make things happen. Using innovation, creativity and a wealth of knowledge, engineers are impacting the world unlike any other. The world is changing, and engineers are the ones behind so much of this development. The majority of today’s services and products had some element of engineering involved in their conception at least, paving the way to long, fulfilling and healthy lives for the people influenced by them.”
