At St Edward’s, our Further Maths A Level course will equip you with the advanced mathematical skills and deep understanding necessary to excel in complex problem-solving, abstract reasoning, and theoretical exploration.

Why Study A Level Further Mathematics?

In A Level Further Mathematics, you will explore advanced topics beyond the standard A Level curriculum, including complex numbers, differential equations, linear algebra, and more. This deeper dive into mathematical theory and application enhances your problem-solving abilities and provides a solid foundation for higher-level studies in mathematics, engineering, physics, and related disciplines.

Further Mathematics is a great choice if you are interested in pursuing careers or further studies in fields such as theoretical physics, pure mathematics, computer science, and engineering, where a strong background in advanced mathematics is essential.

The course content requires you to engage with abstract concepts, apply advanced mathematical techniques, and tackle challenging problems with creativity and precision. It encourages independent thinking and fosters a deeper understanding of mathematical principles.

This course is particularly suitable if you are aiming for prestigious universities or competitive degree programs that require a high level of mathematical proficiency. It opens doors to a wide range of future career opportunities in research, academia, finance, technology, and various STEM fields, where analytical and quantitative skills are highly valued.Shape

Course Content

To study Further Mathematics, you must be completing A-Level Mathematics as an additional option.  This is due to Further Maths building on, and deepen, the learning from the Mathematics A-Level course.

We use the Edexcel as our exam board in A Level Further Mathematics. The course can be split into the following three components:

  • Core Pure: Proof, Complex Numbers, Matrices, Further Algebra and Functions, Further Calculus, Further Vectors, Polar Co-ordinates, Hyperbolic Functions, Differential Equations
  • Decision: Algorithms, Graphs and Networks, Algorithms on graphs, Route Inspection, The travelling salesman problem, Linear programming, Simplex Method, Critical Path analysis
  • Further Mechanics: Momentum and Impulse, Work, energy and power, Elastic strings and springs, Elastic Collisions

This course is assessed with the following equally weighted papers at the end of Year 13:

Paper 1

  • Core Pure Mathematics
  • 1hour 30mins, 75 marks

Paper 2

  • Core Pure Mathematics
  • 1hour 30mins, 75 marks

Paper 3

  • Further Mechanics
  • 1hour 30mins, 75 marks

Paper 4

  • Decision Mathematics
  • 1hour 30mins, 75 marks

All exams are calculator papers and the department have graphics calculators that can be used both in lessons and in exams. However, it is advised that all pupils have their own Casio CG50 calculator, which can be purchased from the school at a discounted cost

Where can this take you?

After studying Further Mathematics at St Edward’s, you could pursue a multitude of exciting opportunities. With a strong foundation in advanced mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills, you'll be well-equipped for further academic pursuits at top universities, specializing in fields such as mathematics, engineering, computer science, or physics.
