Course Content

We use the Edexcel as our exam board in A Level Mathematics. The course can be split into the following three components: 

  • Pure: Proof, Algebra, Co-ordinate geometry, Sequences and Series, Trigonometry, Exponentials and Logarithms, Differentiation, Integration, Numerical Methods, Vectors.  
  • Statistics: Statistical sampling, Data presentation and interpretation, probability, Statistical distributions, Statistical hypothesis testing. 
  • Mechanics: Quantities and Units, Kinematics of constant acceleration, Kinematics of variable acceleration, Forces and Newton’s laws, Moments. 

This course is assessed with the following equally weighted papers at the end of Year 13: 

Paper 1

  • Pure Mathematics 
  • 2 hours, 100 Marks 

Paper 2

  • Pure Mathematics 
  • 2 hours, 100 Marks 

Paper 3

  • Statistics and Mechanics 
  • 2 hours, 100 Marks 
  • 50 Marks for Statistics, 50 Marks for Mechanics 

All exams are calculator papers and the department have graphics calculators that can be used both in lessons and in exams. However, it is advised that all pupils have their own Casio CG50 calculator, which can be purchased from the school at a discounted cost.

A Level Mathematics at St Edward’s, is a versatile qualification, well-respected by employers and a ‘facilitating’ subject for entry to higher education. Careers for people with good mathematics skills and qualifications are not only well paid, but they are also often interesting and rewarding.
