At St Edward’s, our A level Sociology course will equip you with the skills to explore, explain and evaluate the power of the social groups that shape us.

Why Study A Level Sociology?

In Sociology you will be challenged to explore a wide range of issues; from the creation of the concept of childhood to the complex causes of crime.  You will ask why we form the groups that shape us; our families and households, our school peer groups and our religious organisations.

Sociology is a great choice if you are interested in explaining social change in the past and present and want to ask questions about the society of your future.

The course content requires you to have a dedicated and hard-working approach if you are going to be successful. You will be expected to read and make notes in preparation for lessons, regularly review and revise material covered in class and keep up with current affairs.  The easiest way to do this is by engaging with a quality newspaper regularly, listening to or watching the news and watching relevant documentaries.

This course is particularly suitable if you are interested in a career that involves working with and improving the lives of others.

  • Education
  • Families and Households
  • Crime and Deviance
  • Beliefs in Society

Exam board: AQA

Where can this take you?

After studying Sociology at St Edward’s, you would be well prepared for studying the subject, or a related one at university.  A former St Edward’s student who went on to study Criminology said: “I’m so glad that I studied Sociology A-level. It has helped me massively during my first year. I’m learning about all the theories which I already knew because of the Crime and Deviance topic…I still miss those lessons a lot!”

Those who study Sociology at A level go on to a wide range of careers, including journalism, policing, social work, local government, teaching, advertising and business. Those who study the subject at university have a higher rate of employment than those who study many other subjects.
