At St Edward’s, our course will equip you with the skills to critically analysis and evaluate your physical performance and apply your experience of a practical activity in developing the knowledge and understanding of the subject.


Why Study A Level Physical Education?

In A Level Physical Education you will delve into the world of Physical education and apply a variety of concepts such as exercise science, sports psychology, skill acquisition, history of sport and anatomy and physiology. All of which are applied into the variety of physical activities.

A Level Physical Education is a great choice if you are interested in pursuing careers in teaching and coaching, the leisure industry, recreational management, the health and fitness industry and professional sport. 

This course is particularly suitable if you are actively taking part in at least one sport and have a desire to learn the theoretical content that has the potential to enhance the performance.

Course Content

We use OCR as our exam board in A-level Physical education. The course is spilt into different areas to asses different skills:

Theory  

  • 3 exams at the end of the 2 year course 
  • Combined weighting of 70%

1st Exam   

  • 30% overall mark- 
  •  2 hours long 
  • 90 marks 
  • Content is:  Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics

2nd Exam 

  • 20% overall mark 
  • 1 hour long 
  • 60marks 
  • Content is Skill Acquisition, and Sports Psychology

3rd Exam 

  • 20% overall mark 
  • 1 Hour long 
  • 60 marks 
  • Content is Sport and Society and Contemporary issues in physical activity and sports 

Non examined assessment   

  • Practically assessed in one sport either coach or player – 15% 
  • Verbal exam on evaluating a performance and improving that performer- 15%
